Uganda: A Walk to Remember and Advocate for Safer Roads
The Joe Walker Remembrance Relay 2025 is back with a powerful mission: to honor the lives lost on Uganda's roads and to advocate for safer transportation for all. This year's event, taking place on November 15, 2025, will be a 60-kilometer relay starting and ending at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, uniting people in a display of empathy and shared responsibility.
As part of the UN Global Road Safety Week, the relay aims to transform tragedy into purpose. Uganda loses an average of 14 lives daily to road crashes, leaving many injured or permanently disabled. Behind these statistics are the stories of families and friends who have lost loved ones too soon. The Joe Walker initiative seeks to turn this grief into a nationwide movement for change, mobilizing citizens, institutions, and corporate partners to 'walk for those who can no longer walk'.

This year's relay invites corporate organizations, schools, and community groups to form teams that will carry the message of road safety across designated stages of the 60-kilometer route. Teams can be made up of six members walking 10 kilometers each or three members covering 20 kilometers each, symbolically passing a baton at each stage to represent the collective effort in achieving safer roads.
Participation is free, but teams are encouraged to make a voluntary contribution of Shs 20,000. The proceeds will go towards purchasing essential supplies and care materials for road crash victims at Mulago Hospital.
The relay's format emphasizes the theme of shared responsibility, aligning with the UN's call for 'Advancing Sustainable Transport for All'. By walking together, passing the baton, and supporting one another, participants send a strong message that reducing road crashes requires unity, awareness, and community-driven action.
Now in its latest edition, the Joe Walker Remembrance Relay builds on past success in turning walking into a form of advocacy. Each step serves as a reminder of those lost and a step forward towards safer, more responsible road use.
This year's event is held in partnership with the Nicole Foundation, ITMS/MoWT, Sheraton Hotel, Next Media, Fun Cycling, and the Orthopedic Society of Uganda.
